

The 2013-2014 program will be open August 1 through May 31. Winners will be selected in January and June. Insurance discounts will be reported every two weeks. Check your SmartDriveU mailbox for your certificate of completion.
SmartDriveU is a free, online defensive driving course certified by the Delaware Insurance Commissioner’s Office. Its mission is simple, to reduce loss of life and property in senseless motor vehicle crashes by providing education, positive reinforcement and raising awareness among drivers via online and hands on skills training courses. SmartDrive works hand in hand with Wilmington University as partners to promote safety and awareness among Wilmington University students, faculty and staff.
SmartDrive U consists of three mandatory instructional modules and several bonus point modules featuring case studies, videos, games, and graphics in an interactive question and answer format.
The SmartDriveU year runs from August 1 to May 31. Students may enroll and participate on a rolling basis throughout that time. Additionally, students with the highest points in the program may win prizes. Prizes are awarded in January and June by Wilmington University. All students who complete the program may be eligible for an insurance discount.
The top three point achievers in January and June may be eligible for:
- First Place -- $150 WilmU Bookstore Gift Certificate
- Second Place -- $100 WilmU Bookstore Gift Certificate
- Third Place -- $50 WilmU Bookstore Gift Certificate
Each student may also receive a welcome gift with enrollment. The first ten students who complete the program may win a $50 gas card.

The Perfect 10 Driving Tips
- Be alert at all times while making a variety of maneuvers.
- Be adept at speeding up, slowing down, changing lanes, turning and stopping under varying conditions.
- Be aware of other motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, road signs, road hazards and road and weather conditions.
- Exercise good driving judgment at all times so that decisions are timely and sound.
- Pay attention your body, don't take the wheel if you are tired or feeling sick and NEVER, EVER take the wheel if impaired by drugs, legal, illegal or over the counter, or alcohol.
- Manage your driving environment -- this includes your passengers -- to minimize unnecessary distractions and devote your full attention to the task at hand.
- Maintain the appropriate driving attitude -- don't be aggressive, emotionally distracted, or rushed when you take the wheel. The wrong attitude can be devastating.
- Maintain your vehicle. You wouldn't leave the house without brushing your teeth, that's personal hygiene. Adopt an attitude of good vehicle "hygiene" keep your car clean, fueled, and check things like tire inflation, light operation, fluid levels and investigate promptly any unusual sounds or warning signals -- it's your car's way of telling you something's unsafe.
- Practice defensive driving. Defensive driving simply means anticipating danger to avoid accidents.
- Make sure you and your passengers ALWAYS wear your seatbelts. Take a moment to check, it could save lives.
